Is there a tool that can convert pictures of old handwritten journals into typed out document?

Example: I want to read and research a large volume of Samuel Zwemer's journal entries from 1800-1900s

Answer

Probably the best for this is a paid tool called Transkribus.

But other AI technologies such as ChatGPT can do this in a limited way. Here's the breakdown using just these 2 (though other options also exist, see later):

Transkribus

  • Cost = $25/month for 150 pages per month (you can purchase credits to get more-- I think the basic $25 for 150 pages pricing would hold up)
  • Time = you can just feed it the larger documents without breaking it up
  • Accuracy = likely much better than chatgpt.
  • You can learn more at https://app.transkribus.org/

ChatGPT

  • Cost for latest model, ChatGPT Plus (which will be easiest to use and most accurate) = $20/month
  • If you go this route, you'd have to break up your document into smaller chunks, like 2 pages each, so it adds time.
  • You can sample this via https://chatgpt.com/
